The Good, Bad, & Ugly Of iRiver's Clix MP3 Player
I recently gave up on trying to repair my Rio MP3 player, which served me well for almost a year before it got smashed in my luggage, and purchased an iriver clix. There are many pros and a few cons to the this player. If you are interested in purchasing an MP3 player any time soon, consider the iriver clix.
The iriver clix comes with earbuds, a USB cable, a soft case for protection, and an install disc with Windows Media Player 11 and MTV's URGE software.
Pro: There are an abundance of features to the iriver clix. Besides just the standard mp3 file playing, you can play videos, view photos, listen to FM radio, play flash games, view text files, and record voice messages.
Con: The install disc comes with Media Windows Player Beta. Supposedly you need this to run the device and synch music files. How ever, after days of just trying to get the player set up, tech support finally told me to roll back to Windows Media Player 10, which I already had before I used the install disc!
Pro: The button functions are simple, being that the directional pad is one big button surrounding the screen. All you do is click in the direction you desire to Play/Pause. Fast Forward, Rewind, etc., hence the name "clix". You can also lock the pad so that you do not accidentally skip a track.
Con: The iriver only works with Windows XP on a PC. There is no way around this. You can not simply plug in the USB cable to your Mac and drag and drop files into the player. Your Mac will not recognize the device at all and will not even charge it. You can only use Windows Media Player to synch the files, which is very restricting, as I am accustomed to just dragging and dropping files rather than having to use the software.
Pro: There are several accessories to the iriver clix, including a car cassette player adapter to listen to your music through the car speakers, a portable speaker system to amp up the sound and play your music without earphones, and a cradle to let it sit on your desk.
Con: One important accessory is missing, a compatible AC adapter! The only way to charge your river clix is to plug it into the computer USB port. It is highly undesirable for long trips. It can hardly be called portable when you are anchored down by your PC, unless you have a laptop. I contacted sales department about any such accessory or any product from another company which would be compatible. They replied that there was no such accessory but they were planning to develop one soon. Everyone knows that MP3 players are like milk, they go bad fast! Two MP3 player purchases later they will finally release an AC adapter and you won't care any more!
Pro: 2.2"x2.2" screen. The screen is very nice and displays color very well. You can change your background and use any image you want to replace it. The display orientation can be switched between landscape and portrait. This comes in handy when you like using the portrait setting to navigate but need to watch videos in landscape.
Con: Successfully synching videos files and installing flash games can be a pain. Most video files will not synch with the player and the few that do often don't work. Trying to figure out what you need to do to play video files can be very frustrating and more often than not it's not even worth trying. But if you don't care as much about the video feature, it can be just an extra feature for rare use. The player is still worth buying without the video feature.
Pro: The Custom Equalizer setting lets you adjust the sound to the way you like it, whether you like a lot of bass or want the vocals to be sharp.
Con:The battery life is a supposed 27 hours max, but I've only gotten 5 hours max, although I must say that I constatly skip songs. I suppose it matters how you use the device. But don't expect to go all day without recharging.
Pro: 2 Gigabytes of space. If you need to have more than 2 Gigabytes of music available, get help! Then again, videos will take up a lot of your space. 2 Gigs is plenty for me, especially when compared to the price of other MP3 players which cost more but have less space.
Over all I think that the iriver clix is a worthwhile purchase at $200.00 plus tax, but has many limitations that need to be worked out. The price is very good when compared to the features of other MP3 players. Switching from a Rio to an iriver clix is less than a year was like going from Windows 95 to XP. Technology is improving rapidly and becoming cheaper. If the iclix were available when MP3 players first came out it would cost $5,000 or more. I am very happy with my iriver clix, but of course wish I could use it on my Mac and charge it with an AC adapter. Despite some drawbacks I highly recommend the iriver clix.

My niece knows Indian takes and Indian film music. To her, as to most of the reality, this exuberant, colorful, potty and just-plain-fun genre is summarized up in one word: Bollywood.
I squeal that I've gone taken with Bollywood equally well, though non to the said extent as my niece, who owns a number of Indian pictures and regularly splits others. The Bollywood best is so shot that I give to restrict myself to finding those hardly a of its productions that bubble up to catch the care of American movie reviewers. Otherwise I given be lost in Indian ocean of unfamiliar with movie titles, workers and actresses.
My niece also hoards CDs of Bollywood music. There's an Asian mart about her internal that offers a cornucopia of them. Simply she has the identical problem picking out CDs to buy that I do deciding which Bollywood movie Crataegus laevigata be worth my time. Unless she's seen the film from which a soundtrack derives, she's usually in the dark every bit to whether a unique CD's calls and creative people are ones she will enjoy.
At her asking, I set up a way for her to preview a kind of Bollywood strains and even to live with them on her iPod for a while, all for Absent. This room she can take hip decisions about which CDs she ultimately purchases.
First, I searched for Indian medicine Web sites, and specifically for those devoted to Bollywood, or at least modern popular medicine (as opposed, say, to classical Indian ragas). I found several good ones, with names such equally Bollywood world and India FM.
about of the Web sites I found offered song samples, meaning 30-second or 1-minute snippets. Some got full audio streams that allowed the visitor to listen to continuous Bollywood medicine for equally long equally she or he might want. It was these latter that provided the first half of our solution.
Normally, streaming audio, such equally what you hear over an Internet radio post, cannot be saved or downloaded. New computer software, though, makes it possible to record the stream to your hard drive for replaying every bit often equally you like.
Even better, some of the newest audio capture software incorporates something called an mp3 splitter. This software package is able to break the audio stream into part mp3 song files. By the fashion, this is dead legal, because you're simply transcription a broadcast, the very every bit when you read a TV show on your VHS. Voila -- we had the second half of our solution.
Between the audio streams and splitter/recording software package, we made our own real Bollywood mp3 download sites.
Now whenever my niece is in a mode to search the latest tuneful offerings from Bollywood, she ticks on her favorite Indian-medicine Internet radio place, then starts the entering computer software. Pretty soon she has enough Bollywood mp3s to shuffle up for the rest of the week, and she's almost insured to find two or three that will spur her to give a spark to the CD bin behind at the Asian shop.

Online resources for discovering and downloading new music appear to be endless. And once you have discovered one that has everything you want, it’s gone. They come and go like the seasons. Some are legal, most are not.
The best way to keep up with the latest single or album releases, tour dates, and the hottest new bands are social music networks.
Here is a website that focuses entirely on what’s hot right now and where to get cool new tunes for free.
We tune in and analyze this tidal wave of musical conversation to help you find songs, artists, and music bloggers that you want to know about. We want to help you discover new artists you’ll support in the future.
Sound good? Let’s have a look at how Muzic works.
When you’re not logged in the start page shows a tag cloud of “artists happening now”, i.e. artists that have a lot of free stuff out now. You can zoom over to “songs happening now” and “bloggers on our radar” by clicking the small buttons at the bottom of the tag cloud.
Muzic lets you search for artists, songs, or bloggers. But to discover new bands, “popular tags” or “songs by genre” are a better starting point.
The results page is a list of posts that match your query. Posts are created by the bloggers that provide the free MP3 downloads. Each post contains details about the song and a link back to the the site where it was posted originally.
Click on the song name to launch the song’s card, which contains some more information, as well as lists of more songs from the same blog and all songs from that artist below the card.
Once you found an interesting song, click > Get Song in its bottom left. You will be redirected to the original source. Muzic will stay with you though, as it is minimized to a small bar at the top of the page.
Now you can either download the song from the respective blog or from Muzic’s top navigation bar. If you decide for Muzic, > right-click the green > Download MP3 button and select > Save Link As… from the menu. Now select a destination and you’re ready to save the song.
To return to Muzic, click the << back link in its navigation bar at the top.
In case an artist uploaded a song to Muzic, you can directly download the MP3 from the respective song card. Uploaded songs can also be “previewed”, i.e. listened to in full through the Muzic player, which launches in a separate frame at the bottom of the page.
When you’re logged in you can add songs to your faves, follow other listeners or artists that have uploaded songs, and update your profile.
In all honesty, the profile features and community aspects are a little underdeveloped. Unless I missed out on something important, there is no real exchange between users. You can see what others added as their faves and follow them, but that’s about it. On the other hand that isn’t too bad. After all, you’re in for the latest free music and not for even more distractions.
Hungry for more free music?
What are you listening to these days?
